History in the making
There couldn’t have been a better setting than Swett’s Restaurant, a political landmark owned by a well-known Nashville family. And there couldn’t have been a better host than Governor Phil Bredesen.
Our governor, as good as anybody I know at bringing people together, called on Tennessee Democrats to gather over breakfast and be a part of history. I was honored to be invited and proud to join Governor Bredesen and my fellow Democrats in throwing our support behind Senator Barack Obama, who will be our party’s nominee for president.
I was particularly honored to stand in a group with Mrs. Inez Crutchfield. My friend, labor leader Jerry Lee was there, along with A.J. Starling and Eddie Davidson. The room was packed with Tennessee Democrats and full of a new buzz, built on the hope that the eight-year agony of a Republican White House is almost over.
Jake and I rolled out of the parking lot, newly energized in our own campaign to give Tennesseans a U.S. senator who actually listens to them.
I am met with friends this afternoon in Knoxville, and I’m getting together with a group of young professionals tonight. Then, I plan some quality time with my English bulldog, Molly. (She’s feeling pretty neglected, I’m told, since I have been spending more time with Jake than her. )
Got a big day tomorrow in Overton and Macon counties. I let you know how it goes…Mike
