Padgett Statement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
NASHVILLE – Mike Padgett, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, said Friday that, as the nation marks 40 years since the passing of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. we honor a prophet whose wisdom echoes across the ages.
“The words of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech are as fresh today as they were when he first spoke them,” Padgett said. “His message was one of hope for those under distress and duress."
“He called out to all nations and all generations to sit down and solve the problems of injustice and inequality. He dared to dream of a world where black would not be pitted against white nor rich against poor nor civilized nation against civilized nation."
“In the world he hoped for, if there were young mothers having to choose between buying $10 worth of gas or buying groceries, our public servants would reach across political lines for solutions to the suffering. Things like good public education and affordable health care for all would be common goals, not subjects for debate.”
Padgett called on Americans to take King’s prophetic words and “deliver his message to the world.”
William "Mike" Padgett is former Knox County Clerk and small business owner. He and Patty, his wife of 37 years, have three grown children, Matt, Mark and Sara Beth
