Mike Padgett, a Democrat from Knoxville, wants to become the next U.S. Senator from Tennessee and declares he "resonates well with Republicans, Democrats and Independents."

Padgett, who served 21 years at the local level in politics, has also been a business owner. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in biological science and has worked in the advertising field, in Atlanta.

Padgett and his wife have been married 37 years and have three children.

He was active in Gov. Phil Bredesen's campaign, in 2002. Padgett has also been active in other aspects of the political arena.

Padgett said Gray Sasser, Tennessee Democratic Party chairman, asked him to become a candidate for the Senate seat.

"This race is about the people of the State of Tennessee," said Padgett.

Padgett said he believes NAFTA should be "revisited" and manufacturing jobs should be kept on American soil.

"I believe in stopping the war and bringing our heroes home - a war we should never have gotten into," he said.

Padgett's platform includes a high priority on education, with an emphasis placed on revamping "No Child Left Behind." Padgett stressed how the Republican-implemented program has failed to meet the needs of the students, especially when educators have to "teach to the test."

"I'm looking forward to running this race," said Padgett.
